Get to know Laurie

Throughout my years as a volunteer with the Upper Grand District School board, I have been a strong advocate for all students, especially those with special needs and issues affecting youth mental health.

I am a mom of two young adults who both have complex special needs. Shortly after my son started school I was appointed to the Upper Grand District School Board’s Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) representing families affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Through my over 15 years on SEAC, I have been an active member as well as elected Chair and Vice Chair (past). I have formed strong working relationships with many superintendents, trustees, as well as special education staff. At the same time I was Treasurer of our school council's parent council and an active volunteer in the school. I could be found cataloging books in the library, accompanying classes on school trips, helping in the kindergarten classes, serving hot lunches or fundraising for various student body needs.

Two years ago I was appointed to the UGDSB Safe, Equitable and Inclusive Schools Steering Committee and subsequently elected Co-Chair. This committee is comprised of community members from various community associations/agencies serving the UGDSB region. As a single adoptive parent of two young adults who are mixed race and being a member of the 2SLGBTQI+ community myself, I offer a unique perspective and insight. I have a solid understanding of school board policies and practices in the areas of equity and inclusion and I have been part of ongoing consultations with community agencies providing feedback on board practices. When I am not volunteering or in meetings I love to hang out with my daughter and do jigsaw puzzles, watch movies or walk our dog. I also started a small business a few years ago called Treeclaimed Wood Creations making wood quilts and wood accents from recycled wood.
